Before coming to the New Gen conference, I didn’t expect anything. Rather, I thought that I knew everything there was to a church conference, so I didn’t even think about anything outside of my experiences. 

뉴젠 컨퍼런스에 가기 전에는 별로 기대하지 않았습니다. 오히려 교회 컨퍼런스의 모든 것을 알고 있다고 생각했기 때문에 제 경험 외에는 아무 생각도 하지 않았습니다. 

My first impression of New Gen was that it wasn’t anything like Kosta. Unlike Kosta which had many tight cliques of certain people, the shepherds at New Gen were striking conversations, and were looking to make genuine relationships. 

뉴젠에 대한 첫인상은 코스타와는 전혀 다르다는 것이었습니다. 특정 사람들로만 구성된 개별그룹이 많았던 코스타와 달리 뉴젠의 목자들은 대화를 나누며 진정한 관계를 맺으려고 노력하는 모습이 눈에 띄었습니다. 

It was friendly and heartwarming. In the main sessions, we had pastor DL share his sermons with us, and his message was applicable. The sermons were messages that were relevant in my life and were applicable to me in real life situations. 

친근하고 따뜻한 분위기였습니다. 저녁 말씀시간에는 David Larry (DL) 목사님의 설교를 함께 나누었는데, 그의 메시지는 적용이 가능한 메시지 였습니다. 설교는 제 삶과 관련이 있고 실제 상황에서 적용할 수 있는 메시지였습니다. 

For example, the most memorable message was the message on the second night. He explained how you should always seek the kingdom of God first, and then he will provide what you lack. 예를 들어 가장 기억에 남는 메시지는 둘째 날 밤의 메시지였습니다. 항상 하나님 나라를 먼저 구하면 하나님께서 부족한 것을 채워주신다는 말씀이었어요. 

Basically he explained that even though you may go through hard times by obeying God, he will always be with you through the hard times, and that you will never be abandoned. I thought that this was very applicable to me in real life, and the answer to a problem I never knew I had.하나님께 순종하면 힘든 시기를 겪을지라도 그분은 항상 나와 함께하실 것이며, 나를 결코 버려지지 않을 것이라고 설명했습니다. 저는 이 말씀이 제 실생활에 매우 적용 가능하다고 생각했고, 제가 몰랐던 문제에 대한 해답을 얻었습니다.

Another one I personally really liked was Harris’s testimony. The story about his failures and rebuilding his house church was moving, and goes to show that even if you make a mistake that you think is irreversible, there is always hope. 

개인적으로 정말 마음에 들었던 또 다른 강연은 해리스의 간증이었습니다. 그의 실패와 가정 교회 재건에 대한 이야기는 감동적이었고, 돌이킬 수 없을 것 같은 실수를 하더라도 항상 희망이 있다는 것을 보여줬습니다

The people at the New Gen conference were very generous. I cannot express in words how thoughtful and caring they were, and in my mind I still can’t comprehend why they would go so above and beyond for a person that they have never met before. 뉴젠 컨퍼런스의 사람들은 사랑이 많았습니다. 그들이 얼마나 사랑이 깊고 배려심이 많았는지 말로 표현할 수 없으며, 왜 한 번도 만난 적 없는 우리를 위해 그 이상의 것을 베풀었는지 아직도 이해할 수 없습니다. 

Just to list some of the things they did for us, Daniel and Jane woke up at 6AM on their day off to greet us and take us into Disney World. Our host also woke up so early to drive us to and back from Disney World. 저희를 위해 해준 일들 중 몇 가지만 나열하자면, 다니엘과 제인은 쉬는 날 아침 6시에 일어나서 저희를 맞이하고 디즈니월드로 데려다 주었습니다. 저희 호스트도 일찍 일어나 저희를 디즈니월드까지 데려다 주었습니다. 

Pastor Daniel drove us around to aesthetic cafes and shared the place that his family goes to, drove us to a mall and was offering to pay for our lunch. He also drove us to Tampa airport which was almost an hour and a half away from Orlando. 

학생부 사역자이신 다니엘 목사님는 저희를 데려다 주면서 자신의 가족이 자주 가는 카페를 소개해 주었고, 쇼핑몰에 데려다 주면서 점심값을 내겠다고 했습니다. 우리 비행기가 취소되어서 올랜도에서 거의 한 시간 반이나 떨어진 탬파 공항까지 데려다 주기도 했습니다.

I honestly still think he was insane for that. This still doesn’t even come close to everything they did for us. To continue on, the girls from harvest church offered to walk us around Disney Springs, and even participated in a secret Santa in which they gifted us with presents. 

저는 솔직히 아직도 그가 미쳤다고 생각합니다. 이것은 아직도 그들이 우리에게 해준 모든 것에 미치지 못합니다. 계속해서 하비스트 교회의 친구들은 디즈니 스프링스 주변을 안내해 주었고, 심지어 몰래 산타가 (마니또?) 되어 우리에게  선물을 주기도 했습니다. 

Mine in particular I am eternally grateful for. I had mentioned that I wanted LEGO on a passing note, but she stood in line in the heat to buy a LEGO for me. I was so moved and taken aback by how they did all of this without batting an eye. I admire them. 

특히 저는 너무 감사했습니다. 지나가는 말로 레고를 갖고 싶다고 말했더니 더운 날씨에 줄을 서서 저를 위해 레고를 사주셨어요. 웃으면서 사랑과 배려해주는 모습에 정말 감동받고 놀랐습니다. 정말 존경스럽습니다. 

Some highlights for me was obviously Disney, Disney springs, Santa Monica beach, Volcano Bay, Wingstop, etc. but beside that, I think the real highlights were the evening sessions where I got to learn on how to be a better shepherd. 

디즈니, 디즈니 스프링스 몰, 산타모니카 해변, 볼케이노 베이, 윙스톱 등도 분명 하이라이트였지만, 그 외에도 더 나은 목자가 되는 방법을 배울 수 있었던 저녁 세션이 진짜 하이라이트였던 것 같아요. The real purpose of why we were there. Pastor DL’s easy-to-understand sermons were another level of simplicity, yet strong, and made me question what kind of shepherd I wanted to be.

If I had to describe the Harvest church youth and leaders in one word, it would be inviting. 

우리가 그곳에 온 진짜 목적. DL 목사님의 이해하기 쉬운 설교는 단순하면서도 강렬했고, 제가 어떤 목자가 되고 싶은지 생각하게 해주셨습니다.

하비스트 교회 청년들과 리더들을 한 마디로 표현한다면 '매력적'이라고 할 수 있을 것 같습니다.They acted like we were always supposed to be there. There wasn’t any awkwardness. There wasn’t any wariness. They just accepted us right away, and it felt like I had been there since forever. 

 그들은 마치 우리가 항상 그곳에 있어야 하는 것처럼 사랑해 주셨습니다. 어색함도 없었고, 경계심도 없었습니다.. 그들은 우리를 바로 받아줬고, 마치 오래전부터 그곳에 있었던 것처럼 느껴졌습니다.. 

Something that really made me feel loved was when they asked what we wanted to eat in America. So we said stuff like Wingstop, Crumbl cookies. And with no hesitation, they bought us Wingstop, they bought us Crumbl cookies. I think that side of them about always going above and beyond is a quality that I someday want to have. 제가 정말 사랑받는다고 느꼈던 순간은 미국에서 무엇을 먹고 싶은지 물어봤을 때였어요. 그래서 윙스탑, 크럼블 쿠키 같은 걸 말했죠. 그리고 그분들은 주저 없이 윙스탑과 크럼블 쿠키를 사줬어요. 항상 상대를 배려하는 그런 면이 제가 언젠가 닮고 싶은 마음이 들었습니다. 

During this conference, I have felt that I don’t always know everything about what there is to know about church conferences. Also, I need to improve much more in my attitude of serving, and social skills to make new people feel welcomed to our church. I have learnt a lot through Pastor Daniel, Pastor DL, and Alex Pak. 이번 컨퍼런스를 통해 교회 컨퍼런스 대해 제가 모든 것을 다 알고 있는 것은 아니라는 것을 느꼈습니다. 또한 섬기는 자세와 새로운 사람들이 우리 교회에 환영받는다고 느낄 수 있도록 나의 사회성을 더 키워야겠다는 생각도 들었습니다. 다니엘 목사님, DL 목사님, 알렉스 박 목사님을 통해 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 

After all of the kindness and generosity that I received, I will now use these experiences and knowledge to serve others above what I had done previously, and start to seriously think about what I can do for others, and not what others can do for me. 제가 받은 모든 친절과 관대함을 바탕으로 이전보다 더 많은 사람들을 섬기고, 다른 사람들이 저를 위해 무엇을 해줄 수 있는지가 아니라 제가 다른 사람들을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있는지에 대해 진지하게 생각해 보려고 합니다. 

I don’t want their efforts to go to waste. Using the New Gen conference, I want to become a shepherd that makes you feel welcome by inviting people in to make them really feel like they belong. 

저는 그들의 노력이 헛되지 않기를 바랍니다. 뉴젠 컨퍼런스를 통해 많은 사람들을 초대해 목장에서 소속감을 느끼게 하는 목자가 되고 싶습니다. 

I wish to be a shepherd that never gives up Jesus in the face of hardship and fire, and lastly I want to become a shepherd that my mokjang needs, and not an idea of what a shepherd should be.고난과 불 앞에서도 예수님을 포기하지 않는 목자가 되고 싶고, 마지막으로 목자라는 개념이 아닌 목장이 필요로 하는 목자가 되고 싶습니다.
